Importing characters

Bring characters in from a character-sheet PDF or a JSON file.

If your players already have their characters on paper or in another app, you don’t need to type them in again. Fablekeep imports a form-fillable character sheet PDF, or a character exported from another Fablekeep world, and lets you review everything before it’s saved.

Import a character sheet PDF

  1. Ask the player for their character sheet as a form-fillable PDF (for example, the PDF that D&D Beyond exports).
  2. In Party, click Import and choose Character sheet PDF.
  3. Drop the PDF on the dialog, or click to choose it.
  4. Review the result (see below) and click Save character.

Import a Fablekeep JSON file

Characters move between worlds and campaigns as JSON:

  1. On the character’s sheet, open … and choose Export as JSON.
  2. In the other campaign, click Import → Fablekeep JSON and drop the file.

A Fablekeep export keeps everything exactly as it was.

Review and fix

Nothing is saved until you confirm. The Review & fix step shows what came across:

  • Counts of skills, spells, features, items, attacks and languages.
  • Things to check — fields that are missing or uncertain, highlighted so you can fix them on the spot.
  • Unmapped fields — anything that didn’t find a place on the sheet. Tick Keep unmapped fields in the DM notes to keep it as notes.
  • Group — which party group the character joins.

Click Save character, and the character joins the party. Choose another source goes back.

How imported content is matched

Fablekeep matches what it finds on the sheet against the bundled SRD 5.2 content, in English and Spanish:

  • Spells, features, feats, attacks and equipment that match SRD entries are linked to them, with their full text and rules.
  • Anything else (subclasses, spells or items from other books, homebrew) is kept with the name and text from the sheet and marked as a personal import. It works on the sheet as usual.
  • Free text (notes, backstory, personality, appearance) is kept as a personal import too.

Personal imports are for your own table. When you share a world with Share / publish as a module, they’re left out or reduced to their names (see Backups, export and sharing).

Check the result

Open the new character’s sheet and look through the tabs, especially Spells, Features and Inventory. Fix anything that looks off, as you would on any sheet: everything is editable. The sheet’s source shows how it was made (for example PDF import).

To bring in a newer version of a character (after a level up, say), import it again as a new character and delete the old one, or simply level up and edit the sheet in Fablekeep.
